Digital, Open! Headquarter Office of GreatLink Corporation

Shenzhen, China 2002-2005

Is a door still a door defined, precisely or diffusedly, by its wall and floor? Is a wall still a wall defined, precisely or diffusedly, by its floor and ceiling? Is a floor still a floor defined, precisely or diffusedly, by its door and wall? What are the differences between well-defined and ill-defined architectural elements when digital technology has been delicately incorporated in the design process from the very beginning to the very end? How should we conceive what we have long been used to conceive visually, spatially, psychologically, socially and culturally?

What are the differences between technology and art? Is technology a piece of art? Is art a system of technology? Can we make a high-tech factory look like an art museum? Furthermore, what are the differences between natural and artificial environments? Should natural environments correspond to artificial ones? Or, should artificial environments correspond to natural ones? This project elaborates thinking of these kinds with respect to technology, art, nature, and artifact. We claim that technology is art and of course art is technology, whereas natural and artificial environments coincides each other.

GreatLink Electronics Taiwan LTD, an OEM cable assembly company, builds its new factories and offices in Shenzhen, China, in addition to previously established ones in USA, UK, Germany, and Malaysia. The site is located in the main entrance of a newly-developed grand science-based industrial park in the suburban area of Shenzhen, the first city in China opened to the world since 1985. The site, chosen by the Chairman of GreatLink Mr. Max Huang, is sitting in front of a mountain with a great sky view. In order to innovate the image of cable and to pursuit the digital concepts in the site, the two main office/factory combinatory buildings and the restaurant are imagined and shaped as a continuous curved line, with installation of laser-cut steel frames/skins, membrane, fiber lights and concrete structure. To reflect the digital and media era further, the images of multimedia and virtual technology are applied into the façade of the two main buildings. The overall concept is to capture the E-link, electronic link of the artificial buildings, to correspond the N-link, natural link of the contour of the back mountain.
